Keeping Your Cat Healthy and Fit

Whether you’re a proud new owner of a cat or have had one for a bit longer, one thing’s for sure. It’s hard to refuse them when they look at you with their cute eyes and ask for food. You probably end up indulging every time, and pretty soon, your adorable little kitty starts to look more and more like Garfield. You really want to make sure you keep your cat healthy and fit.

Obesity is fast becoming a common problem with pet cats. They might look cute when they are chubby, but the thing is that obese cats tend to live shorter lives. And are more vulnerable to problems including arthritis, fatty liver syndrome, heart diseases and diabetes.

The good news is that you can easily put a stop to this and help your cat regain the ideal body weight and stay fit and healthy.

Also, by playing with your cat often, it will be less prone to boredom and won’t be that inclined to scratch your furniture.

Consult a veterinarian

The first thing you need to do when you notice your cat putting on the extra pounds is to consult a veterinarian. Some cats are just bigger. The doctor will guide you about the ideal weight your cat should have.

Diet

It is important to remember that fat cats aren’t born fat. They completely depend on you for food. So, ensure you give them food that is nutritious and healthy, but don’t overdo it. Cats are carnivores so give them a high protein diet and cut down on the carbohydrates.

It was considered preferable to give your cat dry food, but recently veterinarians have refuted this and stated that wet food is far more healthy and nutritious for the cat. I wrote a great article on best cat food.

Exercise

Cats can sleep for up to 20 hours a day. So, it can be hard to set up an exercise routine for them. Getting your house cat to move around can be especially hard indoors. But every little thing counts.

Cats are generally nocturnal creatures, so they will be far more response and willing to participate in the activities you have planned after dark.

It’s advisable to take it slow at the start, especially if your cat is more than just a little overweight. This is because the extra pounds can take their toll on the cat’s joints. Just five to ten minutes of exercise each day is good in the beginning. A great way to keep cat active is to purchase a cat climber or build a cat climber.

Cats have short attention spans and they lose interest pretty quickly, so it’s better to have several activities planned and to use a different one each day to keep things interesting.

Now, some of you might have a dog and cat, so I figure I would include some useful information on dogs for you here as well

Keep Your Dog Healthy With These Diet Tips

It’s such a wonderful thing to have a dog that can be around you and your family on a daily basis. Dog has been one of the best man’s companions for thousands of years. Having said that, having a dog always comes with a number of responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is to feed him. Properly feeding your dog will play a vital role in making sure that he stays happy and healthy.

Nevertheless, it can be a challenging endeavor to determine what is the appropriate amount of food to allow your dog to have on a daily basis. For this reason, dog owners should refer to specific scientific data, as well as use their discretion and experience with regard to this matter.

Experts state that puppies eight weeks of age or younger should remain with their mother. If the puppy is orphaned, and subsequently deprived of its mother’s milk, the puppy will be more prone to illness than dogs who remain with their mothers for at least eight weeks. Feeding a puppy approximately five percent of his body weight is a good general rule, but it is important to weigh the puppy or carefully observe his size when you dish out his food each day.

Puppies should be fed until they are satisfied and full. In general, a puppy can be fed until his belly appears slightly rounded, but puppies should never be allowed to gorge as it can result in stomach ache, diarrhea or other health problems. When feeding a puppy or adult dog, it is essential to consider the times the meals are served and portion size. An adult dog can easily digest large meals twice a day. However, puppies should be fed smaller portions at higher frequencies to maintain their health. Another good general rule is to decrease the frequency and increase the serving size as the puppy grows to maturity.

Dogs typically become inactive when they reach old age, and therefore require only small amounts of food with less protein and fewer calories in order to remain healthy.

You can help provide nutrients to your dog by including raw food in his diet. Nevertheless, this should be limited to approximately two to four percent of the dog’s body weight.

Additionally, observing the results of the management of your dog’s diet will also help to determine if you are handling his food intake properly or need the advice of a veterinarian.
